Alan James West

Alan James West, affectionately known as Al, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, at the age of 72. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Al’s warmth and humor touched everyone who knew him.

Born on June 5, 1952, in Brighton, England, Al was the son of James and Margaret West. He grew up with a deep love for the sea, a passion that he carried throughout his life. After completing his studies at the University of Southampton, Al embarked on a successful career in marine engineering, which allowed him to travel the world and see his childhood dreams come to life. His innovative spirit and dedication earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike.

In 1977, Al married the love of his life, Linda Clarke. Together, they created a loving home filled with laughter and joy. Their partnership was a testament to true love and mutual respect, and their two children, Emma and Jack, were the center of their universe. Al took immense pride in his role as a father and later as a grandfather, cherishing the moments spent with his grandchildren, Lily and Tom.

Outside of his professional life, Al was known for his generosity and his zest for life. He was an avid sailor, an enthusiastic cook, and a passionate gardener. His friends and family will fondly remember his legendary barbecues, his spirited tales of sailing adventures, and his ability to turn any gathering into a celebration. Al’s quick wit and infectious laughter were hallmarks of his personality, making him a cherished companion and confidant.

Al is survived by his devoted wife, Linda; their children, Emma and Jack; their grandchildren, Lily and Tom; his sister, Susan; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved brother, David.

A celebration of Al’s life will be held at the family’s home on September 20, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. All who knew and loved Al are invited to join in remembering a man whose life was a testament to love, kindness, and a spirit of adventure. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Marine Conservation Society, a cause dear to Al’s heart.

Al James West will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering kindness, his boundless enthusiasm, and his ability to make every day a little brighter.
